Project Update #2

Our group determined that we did not have enough entries from the original project #1 update to run a very useful analysis.  So, our group decided to adjust the parameters and start the project over using Chiropractors from who graduated from 1980-1985 and 2010-2015.  This allowed us to tell more of a story.

We used Physician Compare National Downloadable File from Data.Medicare.gov

What is Data.Medicare.gov?

This site provides direct access to the official data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that are used on the Medicare.gov Compare Websites and Directories. The goal of the site is to make these CMS data readily available in open, accessible, and machine-readable formats.

Started with 2247104 total entries which encompassed a wide variety of different information.

We divided our data up into two datasets.  Chiropractors who graduated between the years 1980 & 1985 and Chiropractors who graduated between 2010 and 2015.  We wanted to know if there were any trends or changes between those who graduated between 1980&1985 and 2010&2015.

Why did we choose this?

We wanted to see more information about those who practice alternative medicines.  Also, Lindsey’s uncle is a chiropractor.

SCRUBBING

Got rid of duplicates within the practice table and updated information for chiropractors that moved and updated the corresponding information within the chiropractor table.

Went line for line within the chiropractor and practice table to make sure there was a row from the practice table that corresponded with a row in the chiropractor table.

Brought us down to 2855 entries total

Additions

Afterwards, we added a ‘School State’ column which listen the state that the chiropractor’s school was located in and a ‘cohort’ column to state whether they graduated in 1980-1985 or 2010-2015.

Business Rules

We came up with the following business rules for our project.

A chiropractor graduates from one medical school

A medical school has many chiropractic graduates

A chiropractor works for at most one practice

A practice has at least one chiropractor
